Yes, there are red sauces and pasta in Italian cuisine, but those are not the only things on the menu. There are creamy white sauces like carbonara and alfredo, fresh fish and seafoods of all kinds, gnocci, cured pork like pancetta and prosciutto, risotto dishes, meaty entrees like osso bucco and bistecca alla Fiorentina, and wonderful cheeses of endless variations. The southern sections of Italy are famous for their dry pasta, fish and seafoods, luxurious olive oils, and tomato sauces. It is the area, along with Greece, that is primarily responsible for the Mediterranean diet so popularized these days. Northern parts of the country use much less pasta and more often favor rice, risotto, and polenta as starches. They also boast greener, more fertile fields that are better able to support cattle, which translates into much more beef, heavy butters, creams, and more dairy products in general.
Da Big Boy'z: For upscale restaurants, Elua is the place. Café Sistina or Mediterraneo are both great for an authentic experience; Arancino Di Mare for shrimp/garlic or duck pizza (other items are also worthwhile); Verbano’s for great dishes at great prices. For fusion restaurants, all are worthwhile, while Ciao Mein is a bit more upscale than the rest.
